This is Us
Our family believes that emotional wellbeing and a strong spiritual foundation contribute the most to our health. The knowledge we gain from science and ancient wisdom, the nourishment provided to us through plants (and animals), the medicine available through plants (and sometimes pharmaceuticals) are gifts from our creator. It is our job to learn how to make the best and highest use of the resources we’ve been given.
As a graduate of Pepperdine University with my MA in Psychology, I learned in my psychopharmacology class that plants are effectively used in the treatment of emotional disorders. Outside of the psychopharmacology class, a few of my professors suggested using Lavender scented sachets or oils to help with anxiety during sessions. Ron, the other half of “us”, has an undergraduate degree in chemistry. Although Ron prefers natural solutions over traditional medicine, he is a strong minded cowboy who was not given to floral remedies.
Ron and I have three grandchildren and four adult sons. One son had a second heart attack in 2014 that left him in an induced coma for nearly a week. After the first event, he made the recommended Heart Association approved dietary changes, followed a prescription regiment and exercised. It was frustrating to be in the hospital again with no clear answers for why and no proposed solution for prevention other than what he had already been doing. Two of our three grandchildren are his and he was determined to stay on the planet for them! After more research, he committed himself to a plant based diet which made a huge difference to his “numbers”; weight, blood pressure, etc. You’ll see many recipes here that are plant based. We include some wild caught fish and Ron, cowboy that he is, is determined to never give up lean grain fed protein! So, most of what we share can be modified to the diet you choose.
A friend approached me with a plant based solution for emotional and physical wellbeing. Between my training from school, Ron’s interest in natural solutions and our family experience I took note. Although the essential oils smelled amazing, I did not jump in! I wondered if they were pure and if they would truly be effective. So, I turn to my resident expert for a second opinion. Hey Ron, “Will you go with me to an all-day event where scientists will be speaking on the subject of essential oils?” I thought, “He’s a man which makes him more cynical about things like the positive effects of lavender oil” and “He has a degree in chemistry. He’ll be able to understand what the science guys/gals are saying and determine if this stuff simply smells great or if it might do what they say it does”. About mid-day through the class he nudged me and said, “We’re in. I’ll support you if you want to learn more about this and teach others.”
So, here we are eating right for our individual bodies, exercising and learning about the efficacy of essential oils and how they interact with pharmaceuticals.
Over the months, as we’ve been teaching what we know and learning from others, our information circle and community of health advocates has grown. Since we’re outgrowing our current vehicles of communication, our dear friend and talented website designer/blogger Social Cindy recommended we launch this site. Welcome! Take you shoes off and stay awhile. Get comfy, have fun, ask questions, share what you know and enjoy the company of like-minded folks who are on a loving journey toward better health.
